Everyone has been bugging me to write down the events surrounding Colemans birth before I forget them, so here it goes:

I was working a graveyard shift when all of the excitement occured, I had not been feeling well for a few days but just figured that it was normal pregnancy pains, afterall I still had 6 weeks to go. I was in the middle of taking a patient to x-ray when it happened. There we were standing in the middle of the x-ray room when I felt something warm run down my leg. Thinking that I had just wet my pants I "gracefully" excused myself to the bathroom. So there I am standing in the middle of the bathroom in a panic. At this point the nurse comes to check on me and to see why I left my patient in the hall (don't worry the patients mom was with her). The nurse informs me that my water has in fact broken and that I needed to get to the hospital because the baby was coming. By now I am freaking out because it is not time and my husband is an hour away in Ogden. So they wheel me upstairs (which I am sure looked real good me being pushed in the wheel chair, while my patient and her mother follow behind). At this point I call "T" who is also in complete shock, but says that he will hurry to Salt Lake so that he can be with me. So next comes the hard part, where to deliver. Obviously driving to Ogden is out of the question, and I was not willing to deliver at Primary's where I am sure they have no idea how to deliver a baby. It is finally decided that LDS is the closest hospital so we will go there. A couple of girls at work were nice enough to drive me there.

Once at the hospital I am ushered into a delivery room, where I am hooked up to an aray of monitors. The look on the nurses faces echoed my own fears. 34 weeks is just too early. There was some discussion on whether to stop the labor and put me on bedrest or to deliver the baby then. They finally decided to start me at 12:30am.

Coleman Thomas Doxey entered the world at 5:03 am on Wed. June 25, 2008 weighing 5 lbs 14 oz and 19 in long. He was rushed out of the delivery room to the special care nursery before we saw him. There he had a bunch of tests done and was given his first IV, which he ripped out moments later. He was also placed on a bubble c-pap to help him breathe because his lungs were underdeveloped. I was finally allowed to see my little guy 2 hours later. He looked so small and fragile with all of those wires attached.
Coleman struggled to breathe because of his lungs were not developed yet so on day 2 he had to have a vent so that they could give him some medication. This however did not prove to be easy for the staff because our little Coleman is a fighter and he did not want the tube in. Finally they had to sedate him so that he could recieve the medication. The tube was taken out the next day and he was placed on high flow oxygen. At this point Coleman was also suffering from severe jaundice and was placed under bili lights. He was so cute chilin in his incubator with these sunglasses that were as big as his head.

Saturday June 28th will be a day that neither "T" nor I will forget. 3 days after Coleman was born we were FINALLY able to hold him. It was the best day of our lives. We cherished the few minutes that we got to snuggle with our little one. From that day on (until we left LDS) we were allowed to hold Coleman for 15- 30 minutes once a day.

On Tues July 1 we were finally transfered to Mckay Dee Hospital so that we could be closer to home. Coleman was alos able to get off of oxygen today. He seemed to enjoy the ambulance ride, and I was just excited that my little guy would only be 10 minutes from home (instead of an hour). The next day we were able to put clothes on Coleman for the first time in his life. (It is funny how even the things that others would consider normal were great accomplishments for us). This was also the start of a trend that would continue until the end of his NICU stay-- he pulled out his feeding tube on a regular basis. Obviously he is still suffering form the jaundice in these pictures. (And no his father is not of a different nationality--this was one of the most frequently asked questions by the NICU nurses).

The 4th of July was an exciting one this year. Coleman finally decided that he could eat and took a whopping 10 cc's from a bottle (hey at this point we will take whatever we can get). We were also surprised that night by the arrival of 10 puppies. We new that Mya would be having her puppies soon but we thought that we had another week or so. So under the fireworks we watched Mya give birth to 8 black labs and 1 yellow lab. In the long run this worked out because we were able to pay off the majority of Colemans medical bills with the money we made selling the puppies.

After our adventure the night before the last thing that we needed was bad news, but that is exactly what we got when we arrived at the NICU. The Dr. had decided to do an echo because of the heart murmur that he had heard. The echo showed that Coleman had a hole in his heart. (PDA) This is an opening that is necessary in utero, but that should close shortly after birth. HIs PDA measured 5-6mm wide. So the Dr. decided to start him on a medication called Neoprphen to try and close this opening. In order to give this medication they would have to put an IV in Colemans jugular vein. If the medication did not work our next option was to have surgery to close it. We waited on pins and needles for three days. We were then informed that there was still a hole, but they would try the medication one more time. After 3 more days of waiting still nothing, luckily Coleman was doing well enough that they decided to let him grow bigger and then evaluate him then and decide if surgery was necessary.

Coleman continued to do better everyday, and finally after 16 long days in the NICU he was able to come home!!!! He even got to hang out with his cousin he was due before him, but came 10 days after him. Oh ya, he also got to hang out with grandpa.

ABOUT US

I decided to write this blog not only to keep family and friends updated on what is going on in our hectic lives, but to also keep a journal of the events for our family.
T and I met on a blind date . We were married in the Ogden Temple July 30,2005. We bought a house in Ogden Utah, and lived a quiet life until the summer of 2008 hit like a hurricane.
